ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: Avatar Edition

My crystal ball has sat dormant for too long. In fact, I haven't offered any future predictions since June, over six months ago! So, I figured after having my face melted by the epicness of Avatar (see yesterday's post), I thought I'd look at how this revolutionary movie is going to ultimately change hollywood.

First though, I'd like to say one of my future predictions has come to pass, sooner than I had anticipated. Back in June, I predicted:

12. Say goodbye to the file-size limit for XBLA games. There won't be one.

That was in reference to XBLA for the next Xbox. Turns out since I made that prediction Microsoft killed the size limit for the 360. So. while not a direct correlation, this almost 100% guarantees this prediction will pan out. Why would they backpedal on a good decision for their next system? I'm going to chalk this down as my 2nd correct prediction. The first being:

FFXIII will not be exclusive to the PS3.

I had that one nailed down a year before the official announcement.

ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: Episode IV: Avatar Edition

Avatar is the most expensive movie ever made, with a cost of over $300 million to make and another $200 million in distribution, marketing, etc. costs. No worries though, Avatar will make it all back and more, helped in part by a higher than average number of people who see the movie multiple times. Put me down for a total box office take of $730 million worldwide before leaving theaters.

3D is the way of the future. Within the next 10 years, we're going to see a huge surge in the number of 3D movies, as Avatar's proprietary camera technology becomes more commonplace. Come 2019, most, if not all, major hollywood releases will be in full 3D.

Both George Lucas and Stephen Speilberg were shown the technology during the production of Avatar. Lucas is impossible to predict, but I promise you Speilberg will use the technology... probably sooner rather than later. Look for a Speilberg 3D movie using Avatar tech within the next 3 years. Jurassic Park 4, if it ever gets made, will be in 3D.

Avatar is actually 40% Live action, 60% photorealistic CGI. By 2015, Avatar Tech (including the new motion capture technologies) will be used to produce a 100% CGI movie, but it will look so damn good you wouldn't believe it.

Avatar wins every award know to man for visual effects. No contest. Don't even bother nominating anyone else. It may also win best musical score, Cameron has a shot at director (will be nominated at minimum for Oscar), and Zoe Salanda will be considered for her role as Neytiri. I'd like to see Avatar in the run for best picture, but it wouldn't win it.

Cameron is on record as saying if Avatar is successful, he'd like to do two sequels. My prayer to whatever celestial entity oversees the universe is that Avatar will indeed become a trilogy. The world of Pandora is far too captivating to be limited to one movie. Fictional or not, the Na'vi culture fascinates me, and I'd like to see more of it. (I do have a Sociology degree, so a lot of interesting cultures appeal to me). All good things come to those who wait... and wait we must, because Avatar 2 won't be out until winter 2013 or summer 2014.

Like Star Wars, the Avatar universe will expand beyond the movie. Besides the obvious toy lines and already released tie-in game, a novel line or comic line would not surprise me in the least. Look around... Game franchises Starcraft, Warcraft, Gears, Halo, Mass Effect, Rwsident Evil... they all have related novels. In movies, Aliens and Predator have some, as does Terminator, and there are more. Tie in novels have come out for TV shows Stargate SG-1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek (which like Star Wars has spawned a huge novel line). Avatar will get the novel treatment, and you bet I'll read 'em.

Earlier this year, I thought to myself, "District 9 is the movie I'm buying a Bluray player for." Well, now I'm thinking... "Avatar is the movie to make me buy the biggest LED TV I can possibly afford in order to watch it in full splendor." I'm already saving.

Time to put the crystal ball away for a month (or six...) have a great night everyone!

ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: The Next Xbox

It's my turn to write something again before Silva gets his hands all over the blog for the weekend, and I thought I'd bring out my crystal ball to gaze at what the future holds for the next Xbox. My crystal ball assures me it's taking the job seriously this time, unlike when if forecasted Onechanbara as Game of the Year.

First, I have a brief announcement about upcoming reviews. It seems when it rains, it pours, so I'm going to be more busy this June than I had previously anticipated. Here's a more accurate picture of what you can expect from me this month:

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel (review is done, merely awaits posting)
Ghostbusters (will probably need an online co-op buddy)
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (My 1st Sports Game review)
Fallout 3: Point Lookout

So, with 2 new games about to be introduced to my card, I'll be making a scramble over the weekend to clear room in "The Four" for them by completing Wolfenstein 3D and Wallace and Gromit. I haven't had much success working on my backlog lately LOL. (Every game in the current 4 has been purchased in the last month...)

ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: Episode III: The Next Xbox

Idle speculation can be fun, so I'm going to throw down a few predictions on what Xbox Next (or XBN as I'm calling it, because 720 is stupid) will offer.

1. All XBN units will come with harddrives. Like the 360, these harddrives will be removable and come in different sizes. Microsoft will have learned from developers and the gaming public that shipping a unit w/o a harddrive was a stupid idea, and caused more trouble than it was worth. I forsee all XBN units coming with an 80gb harddrive on the cheapest model, 250gb as standard, and 500gb for Elite, if Microsoft goes with a 3-variant plan again. With the popularity of installing games on harddrives, XBLA, videos, demos, DLC, and all of that, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft eventually rolls out a 1tb hard drive to be sold seperately. People with 360s will be able to transfer everything on a 360s hard drive to the XBN's hard drive.

2. XBN will be 100% backwards compatable. I think the 360 has been successful enough, and the gaming public unhappy enough about how the first Xbox ended, that Microsoft will make the XBN backwards compatable to keep making money off the older system for as long as possible.

3. The XBN will NOT suffer the hardware problems that have been the bane of the 360s existence. Call me an optimist, but I don't think Microsoft wants to spend the kind of money they did on warranties and repairs for the 360 ever again. Since they have a larger market share now, and beating out Sony to have a system out first isn't such a priority, they'll take the time to make sure the next system doesn't fail constantly.

4. XBN will be the cause of stampedes in Walmart during the 2012 holiday season. I will be taking its release week on vacation, out of fear for my life =P (and because I plan on being an early adopter this time around... I waited a year to see if the PS3 would suck as bad as I thought... it did {and that comes from a die-hard PS2 lover}.)

5. XBN will continue to feature Twitter, Facebook, and Netflix support, but there will be more. I find it amusing that a company that used "we're focusing on the games" as an excuse for not making a 360 Blue-Ray player has been making a lot of business moves that have absolutely nothing to do with games... What's the next major partnership? GAMEFLY. I'm sure you'll be able to organize your queue right on your 360, and Tweet all about what you're getting while you're at it. (BTW I absolutely abhor Twitter, but that's a rant for another day...)

6. Project Natal, or an upgraded version of it, will be built into XBN, and be available from day 1, in a further bid to siphon off some of the Wii crowd. The demo looked interesting, but I'm not convinced yet that Natal is anything more than a gimmick... we'll see if it can offer meaningful additions to games, or provide some great games of its own, and not be a door for Wii-esque shovelware.

7. Microsoft is going to steal the idea of Home from Sony and make something similar to it... I'm just waiting for "Avatar Town"...

8. XBN will be a Bluray player. GUARANTEED.

9. Microsoft Points will go the way of the dinosaurs, with transactions going directly to your credit card. Here's to hoping!

10. Direct-download retail titles will become a bigger deal, and more contoversial. Xbox Originals didn't sell well, but Microsoft is trying again with 360 titles. The advantage? Not having to wait so long to get your game. Disadvantages? Huge space requirements on hard drive, no physical copy, can't "shop around" for the best price. I don't see this significantly cutting into retail sales, but it'll be sticking around. I wouldn't be surprised if most of XBN's launch line-up is available to direct-download from Day 1. I have a crazier idea though...

11. XBN will feature direct-download game RENTALS. Right now, movies downloaded off the marketplace act like rentals, as they automatically delete after a certain amount of time. Imagine if you had the ability to download a new retail game the day it released for a fraction of the full cost, on the condition that it would automatically delete after 5 or 7 days and you'd have to re-rent (and redownload) it? Profits made from this would go to Microsoft, the publisher, and the developers, so companies like EPIC couldn't while so much about rentals hurting their profitability. Of course, the new whining would be that everyone is digitally renting and retail sales could possibly slump.

12. Say goodbye to the file-size limit for XBLA games. There won't be one.

13. Video party chats.

That'll cover me for today. As I spend more time thinking about it, there may be more XBN predictions in the future. Enjoy your weekends!

ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: Episode 2

Today (or should I say tonight?) I decided to bring out my crystal ball for another round of gazing into the future, to make a couple more predictions. Remember, my crystal ball has the habit of distorting reality, but I managed to tune it a bit, so today's predictions fall into the realm of the plausible.

2009 will be known as the Year of DLC

This probably doesn't come as too much of a surprise. With DLC coming for Fallout 3 and GTA4, DLC will get a lot of attention early in the year, but we should see content for L4D, Tomb Raider Underworld, and who knows what else. DLC will take major steps forward in 2009, and more content released and purchased than ever before. The crystal ball also predicts that x360a will be making one slight new advancement to embrace this change in the industry. What could that advancement be? The crystal ball says you should be able to see for yourself within the next month.
While we're on the subject of DLC, the crystal ball tells me it knows what the first two DLC campaigns for L4D will be:

Deaducation (working title)
In this potentially controversial expansion, the survivors find themselves at the top floor of an academic building on a college campus. To survive, they must make their way through several linked academic buildings and the library before finally making it outside. From there, they must shoot their way to the college's football stadium, and make a harrowing last stand at midfield with ramshackle defenses, while they wait for a rescue chopper to arrive. Fighting the infected swarms of college students won't be pretty...

Mighty Mall
The other campaign takes place in a parody of the Mall of America. The survivors must fight through food courts, an indoor amusement park, a movie theater, a restroom, two department stores, and countless long halls of stores. Play starts in the East Parking lot, which the survivors can't escape from. Their evac is an APC that will pick them up in West Parking lot, clear across the mall, after they've made their last stand in the parking garage. Can the 4 humans make it out alive? Valve will announce this campaign is the longest, running an average 20 minutes longer than the others (on normal... God help you on expert).

Kingdom Hearts on 360
Moving away from DLC, sometime this year it will be announced that all future Kingdom Hearts titles will be on the 360 and PS3. Don't act surprised. I predicted well over a year before FFXIII was announced for the 360 that it would happen (I have friends who will verify this!). The signs were all there. When Infinite Undiscovery came to 360, and Last Remnant was known to be multi-platform, along with Square-Enix's announcement that they wished to go multi-platform in the future, why would they keep their signature franchise stuck on one system? (I'm referring more to announcements here than release dates, because I know the above chronology is a bit fuzzy) Now, the new Star Ocean game is 360 exclusive (if I'm remembering right), so it is possible Kingdom Hearts could stay on Sony systems, but I highly doubt it. They'll want to milk that franchise for every penny they can.

That concludes my predictions for today. Tomorrow I roll out a major achievement progress update.

ThrawnOmega Predicts the Future: Episode 1

NOTE: Getting this to 4 items actually took a while, but was quite a bit of fun. I'm planning on making this a sub-series within the blog, so I can add more items as I'm feeling creative.

Today being the last day of 2008, I felt like gazing into my crystal ball to see what the future holds for 2009. It should be known that my crystal ball has been know to grossly distort reality and spew forth the claims it finds most amusing. Some of these might come true, some are probably wishful thinking, and others will be plain nonsense. Your challenge is to guess when I'm being serious (if I'm ever serious) and when I'm kidding =P... You ready?

2009 Game of the Year: Onechanbara: Bakini Samurai Squad

Do you like scantily clad women? Killing zombies? Samurai sword hack 'n slash action? Bikini Samurai Squad combines all these fantastic things into the perfect trifecta of gaming bliss. Players will be able to slice the undead with a roster of hotties in what will probably be the most compelling and emotionally moving story ever told in videogame form. What's more, you can even customize what the ladies wear! How can this game possibly suck? The crystal ball predicts sales in the United States to exceed 5 million units sold in the first two weeks after release.

Need to know more? Here's a description I found on filefront.com "In Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad, Aya, a descendent of the family known as IMICHI, meaning blood that goes out of control, reconciles with her sister Saki and live together in peace for awhile. The peace doesn’t last for long as an infestation of zombies have plagued the city. The sisters join together to draw their swords and rid the city of evil. Gamers can play with a friend in Co-op Mode or switch between any of the three beautiful playable characters in single player. Each character has a variety of unique moves that can be mastered during combat to destroy enemy zombies. Get too much blood on either sister and be driven into Rage Mode and gain more power and agility to destroy enemies faster and deadlier." This game is made of Epic Win.

News story of the year: Jack Thompson to run for Senate.

Reading Jack Thompson's colorful history from Wikipedia was one of the most entertaining things I've done in a while. Perhaps this legendary videogame hater isn't as off the radar as we would hope. The Republican party of late would LOVE this guy. Conservative Christian values? Check. Disregard for rules, procedures, and unrelenting vigilantism? Check, check, check. Sure, he was disbarred and fined over $40,000, but some politicians have survived worse. If Thompson can fire up a Republican base with his conservative values (takes notes from Sarah Palin, okay Jack?) and add just the right amount of fear-mongering in the media (too many examples to list, but Videogames finance Terrorism! seems like a nice slogan to start with), he could have what he needs to start making a run at that Senate seat, next time there's an election. It's never too early to start that grass-roots campaigning. I mean, the guy's from FLORIDA, and in 2000, it seems many of them forgot how to properly vote. If he has a political future anywhere, it'll be in Florida... (Florida citizens need not get mad at me... I live in the state that elected Jesse Ventura governor, OK?)

Avatars to be expanded in... fantastical... new directions.

If you're like me, you've probably seen about a million versions of the Joker on people's avatars. (For the record, I made mine before there were a MILLION of them =P) The latest issue of OXM even shows one of these Jokers, as well as a Barack Obama, Pip-Boy, Jack Black, and Michael Jackson. Microsoft figures out that some people like making their avatars look like other people, or look unrealistic, and rolls out a new line of avatar accessories and options to capitalize on that. Look forward to angel wings, magic wants, the ability to change your skin color to unnatural shades (blue, green, purple, etc.), reptile scale skin patters, and an ever-increasing variety of other fantasy items. Perhaps at last I'll be able to make my avatar look like Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Nate Gillick scores a writing job for major gaming magazine

While the crystal ball would not say where, it believes the writer of this esteemed blog, pictured above, will definitely be scoring a job (complete with paycheck!) from one of those sweet videogame magazines. (For the record, that picture is two years old, and I have no problem making fun of myself :P) Will it be OXM? Game Informer? EGM? Somewhere else entirely? Who knows? He has the determination and (in his own mind, at least) the talent, but does he have the experience? The crystal ball predicts he'll continue to write every review he can for x360a to pad that resume as much as possible.

That's all of episode 1 of ThrawnOmega predicts the future. I hope you had as much fun reading it as I did writing it, and stay tuned for future episodes!

(I forgot to credit images today, but only the picture of me is my own. If owners of those images see this and request I remove them, I shall obey.)
